While this might mean lower prices, fewer crowds, and vibrant landscapes, it also involves potential tropical storms—or worse, hurricanes. We’ve personally experienced hurricane disruptions, and believe me, it's not fun.
Travel smart: Monitor weather forecasts, fully understand your hotel and airline cancellation policies, and most importantly, invest in quality travel insurance. A little preparation ensures peace of mind and keeps your vacation stress-free.
2. Discover Beyond San Juan’s Streets
Sure, Old San Juan is a must-see. Its colorful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and bustling atmosphere make it an unforgettable stop. But don't limit yourself to just the capital.
Puerto Rico is full of lesser-known gems, like the laid-back western coast, home to relaxed beach towns like Rincon and Aguadilla. For nature lovers and surfers, these areas offer world-class waves and stunning sunsets.
Additionally, explore nearby islands such as Culebra and Vieques, both renowned for crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches, and tranquil island vibes. Expand your itinerary beyond the typical tourist route and you'll discover incredible places most travelers miss.

Speaking of those islands—Culebra and Vieques—take our advice and fly there instead of taking the ferry. Ferries involve time-consuming trips across Puerto Rico and lengthy sea rides, which often include delays and seasickness risks.
Opting for a quick 30-minute flight directly from San Juan ensures you’ll maximize your precious beach time, and while it's slightly pricier, it's well worth it for the convenience and smoothness of the journey.
4. No Passport Required, but Mind the Tipping
Puerto Rico, as a U.S. territory, offers the convenience of no passport or customs for American travelers. You can fly in easily, spend U.S. dollars, and dive right into your Caribbean adventure.
But remember, American-style tipping is customary here: typically, 15% is the minimum, 20% standard, and above that for exceptional service. Be ready to tip generously in restaurants, tours, and hotels. Budget accordingly, and you'll experience seamless and friendly service throughout your stay.
Bonus tip: Puerto Rico’s drinking age is 18, making it the perfect destination to legally enjoy those world-famous piña coladas if you're under 21.
